How the taxable income is reached
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| Gross salary | €50,000.00 |
| Employee allowance (Arbeitnehmer-Pauschbetrag) | −€1,230.00 |
| Special expenses allowance (Sonderausgaben) | −€36.00 |
| Social insurance deduction (Vorsorgepauschale)Pension €4,650.00 · health €4,225.00 · care €1,150.00 · unemployment €0.00 | −€10,025.00 |
| Taxable income (zu versteuerndes Einkommen) | €38,709.00 |
| Income tax under § 32a | €6,803.00 |
The Vorsorgepauschale is €800.00 less than the €10,825.00 actually deducted from your pay. Health is allowed at the reduced 7% rate plus the 1.45% Zusatzbeitrag share rather than the full 8.75%, and unemployment insurance gets nothing because health and care alone use up the €1.900 ceiling they share. That is why the taxable base is higher than gross less social insurance.
Health insurance uses the 2026 average Zusatzbeitrag of 2.9%, half paid by you. Your own Krankenkasse sets its own, so a calculator using a different supplement will land within about a hundred euros a year of this figure.
In the progression zone: the marginal rate rises continuously rather than stepping between brackets.

What this calculation assumes
- Tax class I by default — single, no children — with no church tax. Change either above.
- Taxable income is gross less the €1,230 employee allowance, the €36.00 special-expenses allowance and the statutory Vorsorgepauschale under § 39b — which is narrower than the contributions actually paid, so the taxable base is higher than gross less social insurance.
- Within that deduction, pension counts in full, health at the reduced 7% rate plus the employee's 1.45% Zusatzbeitrag share, care in full including the childless surcharge, and unemployment insurance only up to what is left of the €1.900 ceiling it shares with health and care — in practice nothing at an ordinary salary.
- Statutory health insurance at 8.75% — the 7.3% general rate plus the 2026 average Zusatzbeitrag of 2.9%, half of which you pay. Every Krankenkasse sets its own supplement, so if yours is above or below the average your net will differ from this by a hundred euros or so a year.
- No allowances entered on your Lohnsteuerkarte (Freibeträge), no Riester or company pension, no capital income, and none of the state-specific variations — Saxony splits the care contribution differently.
- Class III applies the splitting tariff by halving the tax base and doubling the result. Classes II, IV, V and VI use the class I tariff here, so treat those as indicative only.
